MTIA was formed in the mid-1980s, incorporated and acquired non-profit status in 1985. The Original founders of MTIA include Jack and Margaret Tucker, Bonnie and Jack James, Laura Svendsgaard, Alane O'Rielly and Dorothy Gibson. Today we have over 200 members.
MISSION/SERVICES TO PUBLIC
Members of MTIA staff the Visitor Center at East Peak. They lead hikes every Saturday and Sunday as well as on holidays, Wednesday evenings during the summer and moonlight hikes each month on the full moon, all of which are free and open to the public. Special hikes are also led for school children. MTIA also coordinates with the Department of Parks and Recreation to provide an Astronomy Program on the new moon of the months of April through October. These programs are held at the Mountain Theater and are also free and open to the public.
GRAVITY CAR BARN
The MTIA had taken on the project of building at the East Peak a Gravity Car Barn which will house a replica of a gravity car and an interpretive display from the days of "The Crookedest Railroad in the World"- the Mill Valley & Muir Woods Railway - which ran on Mt. Tam from 1896 to 1929. The project has been approved by the State of California, the gravity car replica has been built, and MTIA is awaiting approval of the State Fire Marshall before construction can begin.
