What should you bring on an MTIA hike? Ten Essentials.
We recommend all of these items, plus whatever else you want to carry.
- MAP/COMPASS
Use them to know where you are and where you are going. Be sure to tell someone at home of your plans.
- WATER
Bring at least one quart per person. On hot days, bring two. Some hikes do not pass by water sources.
- FIRST AID KIT
You may need to come to your own rescue, or help someone else.
- FOOD
Weekend hikes stop for lunch, so bring something tasty and nutritious! Wednesday hikes do not stop for a meal; just snacks. Reduce packaging to eliminate trash.
- SUNSCREEN/SUNGLASSES
Protect yourself - the sun shines brighter up here.
- STORM GEAR
A beautiful sunny morning can turn into a cold rainy afternoon. Plan ahead!
- STURDY BOOTS
The trails are sometimes pitched, steep and usually rocky. Protect your ankles.
- KNIFE
Handy for all kinds of purposes, especially the type with extra tools.
- FLASHLIGHT
A necessity when the day is short and the trail is long.
- GARBAGE BAG
For your trash and for trash you find along the way.
- CELL PHONE
Many of the peak areas and west-facing areas have service for emergency calls.
Summer and spring are warm, fall and winter can be cool. Layered clothing is best.
